What GPR Can and Cannot See

Honest limits of ground-penetrating radar, and the tools that complement it.

GPR sends radio pulses into material and reads the reflections. It is excellent at finding changes: rebar grids, conduits, voids, buried utilities and moisture-related contrasts in many materials.

It is not X-ray. Metal ducts blind what is behind them; saturated clay soils and saline water absorb the signal; small deep targets can disappear entirely.

That is why professional surveys pair GPR with line tracing, cover meters and moisture readings, and why reports state confidence levels rather than overclaiming. A good survey tells you what is known, what is probable and what remains uncertain.
